WILDEMAN

made in The Netherlands (2004)          clay          collection: Adriaan Rees

Wildeman at the exhibition 'Zangers en helden' (2005) at the Princessehof Ceramics Museum - Leeuwarden, The Netherlands

Ank Trumpie

former curator of Museum Princessehof Leeuwarden, 2005

The Wildeman is a contemporary interpretation of a Greek sacrificial statue. In contrast to its classical predecessor it has been castrated, so instead of a phallus it is now equipped with today’s status symbols such as money and a mobile phone. The work may be regarded as a portrayal of modern man who despite social guidelines is led by his primitive urges, which are expressed in a modern, ‘civilised’ way at best.
