ADRIAAN REES

In 2014 I went back to Berlin in Germany to work in a studio space in the East part of the city. It was not my first time in Berlin. I went there already back in the 1970s when I was a teenager. At that time the city was cut in two parts by the Berlin wall. The second time was right after the fall of the Wall and the third time I was visiting a close friend in 2005. This time I came to work on invitation.

Livingstone Gallery is able to rent a special studio for artists in residence. The city has a huge influence on my life and work and this time was no exception. In the museum I found a wonderful collection of paintings by Caspar David Friedrich. His works are crossing my path for already more than 40 years but this time I was so impressed that I started to make works about several paintings like Der alte Eiche and Verschneite Hutte. I also started painting on found objects, such as wood and floor tiles from old renovated houses around the studio. In the Mauer Park I collected flowers and lits from beer bottles to use in my collages. At the Bernauer Strasse I made the short performance Zwaaien (English: Waving). This performance was inspired by an old picture about people who were waving from one side to the other side of the wall to family and friends during the Cold War. The show in 2015 was full of passion and memories about Berlin and her troubled past, about my love for Caspar David Friedrich and about travelling and saying Good Bye.

Dit werk van Adriaan Rees vond zijn oorsprong in Berlijn toen hij daar eind 2014 werkte in het atelier van Livingstone Projects Berlin.

De keramieke beelden zijn geïnspireerd op de schilderijen van Caspar David Friedrich in de Alte Nationalgalerie in Berlijn, die Adriaan Rees meerdere keren bezocht tijdens zijn verblijf in Berlijn. In zijn kenmerkende combinatie van elementen uit diverse culturen en tijden verwerkt Adriaan Rees in zijn sculpturen nu een stuk van de Berlijnse muur.

Adriaan Rees reist constant van het Westen naar het Oosten (lees: Nederland en China). Het almaar afscheid nemen en weer thuis komen aan beide zijden vergt zijn tol. Foto’s uit de zestiger jaren van Berlijn, waar mensen aan de Bernauer Strasse naar elkaar zwaaien van Oost naar West, inspireerde hem tot het maken van een hedendaagse versie. Op dezelfde plek maakte hij een korte performance op een houten trappetje met zijn Chinese vrouw Li Libo.

Andere Oost-West ervaringen verwerkt hij in de installatie Mein Land (een combinatie van graffiti en zijn eigen beeld The Acrobat in het Mauerpark) en hij neemt een kunstwerk van Joseph Beuys uit de Wirtschaftswert serie voor even weer terug naar Oost Berlijn (zoals Beuys alledaagse objecten van Oost naar West liet sturen).
